Location: RI

This dog has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped.

This handsome lad is Farley!
Farley appears to be a Yellow Labrador Retriever mix about 2 years old. He is solidly house trained and crate trained. He happy to sleep in his crate all through the night, and used to being out and about the house/yard during the day. He is used to someone being home all the time, so being alone might take a transition period. He has been trained to an invisible fence. He has not been leash trained, so this will need to be worked on.

Basic group training classes are suggested for Farley and his new person, not only because you get to learn commands together and it offers an opportunity for confidence building and socialization for the dog, but because it helps to strengthen that ever-important bond between the dog and his human family. And it’s lots of fun! A well-mannered, obedient dog will be welcomed most anywhere you take him. Farley has not been on many adventures off of his property, so his new people should be prepared to expose him slowly over time to new experiences, and always with treats and positive rewards.

Though a fenced yard is an ideal place for your pup to romp and play safely, if that’s not an option then lots of daily leash walks and opportunities to play off-leash in a dog park is the next best thing. A tired dog is a good dog! Dogs of all ages also benefit from mental stimulation – think puzzle toys and games – and this will be true of Farley. Dogs are a lot of work and require a strong commitment to teaching them obedience, socializing them with other dogs and people, playing with them and loving them to pieces. It takes a lot of time, energy and patience to bring in a new dog, but Farley will make it totally worth it!

Farley is affectionate and outgoing, even-tempered, somewhat gentle, and a bit goofy at times. He shows a friendly interest in new places, people and new dogs. He will bark and/or jump up in these situations out of excitement. so he might not be best suited for a household with very small/young children. He has been around a 13-year old boy and they have enjoyed each others' company.

Medical Note: This dog was treated for demodectic mange as a puppy and the dog responded well to treatment with no recurrence to date. Please note that demodex can flare up in any dog in times of stress (eg, transport, transition to a new home, change in food, etc). As such, the adopter is advised to discuss this condition and best next steps with their veterinarian. SOS recommends that dogs with a history of demodectic mange be kept on regular NexGard or Bravecto for flea/tick prevention for at least 3 months or until 18 months of age. Please see here for more information on demodectic mange: http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/mange-demodectic-in-dogs/741. Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

Farley's Backstory:  Farley was placed as a young puppy in a RI home where he was very loved and did very well. Unfortunately, his senior adopter is not able to handle him or give him the exercise he would like, so he is looking for a new home.

Adoption Fee: $585

**Additional info you should know -  For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix.  We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label.   Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption.  There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
