Oh my Handsome!!
This gorgeous boy appears to be a Labrador Retriever mix about a year old. He can be exuberant in play but responds well to vocal correction - and treats are a great motivator. He's good with other dogs, children that he's met, and is interested and playful towards the inside cat at his foster's. It's possible he would chase the outside cat who is more engaging, but if told no, he is respectful. He's a fun loving guy who loves people and finds new places interesting. When he wants to go out, he'll bark some and occasionally will "watchdog" bark at an unusual voice or noise. He's working diligently on his house training, is crate trained, and walks on leash. He sometimes pulls in eagerness when first out of his crate. Handsome can be a bit rowdy in the house, but knows "sit," "down" and is working on "wait."
We strongly recommend that all our dogs attend obedience classes because you get to learn commands together, and it offers an opportunity for confidence building and socialization for the dog, and it also helps to strengthen that ever-important bond between the dog and his human family. It’s lots of fun, too! A well-mannered, obedient dog will be welcomed most anywhere you take him.
Though Handsome doesn’t necessarily require a fenced yard, he will need lots of daily walks and opportunities to play off-leash in a dog park which is the next best thing. A tired dog is a good dog! Dogs of all ages also benefit from mental stimulation – think puzzle toys and games.

Handsome has a long list of things he loves to do and he's eager to find his forever family and share this list with them. He loves a good adventure so if you do, too, fill out an application today! Handsome calls "shotgun"!

Handsome's Backstory: Handsome was hit by a car last December and he lay in someone’s yard for two days before being brought in to the vet. He had a large flap laceration to the right side of his face with orbital and sinus fractures. The orbital rims and floor support the eye globe and because shards of bone had to be removed, his right eye sits further back in his head than the left. Initially, Handsome had difficulty with depth perception, but this has either resolved or he has learned to adapt, as there seem to be no remaining residual problems with depth perception. Handsome had a second surgery to remove some of the excess eyelid tissue due to the lack of bony support. He has healed and functions completely normally. His only remaining evidence of the injury is cosmetic, in that his right eye opening is now slightly smaller than the left and the position of his right eye is deeper than the left.

Medical Note: This dog was treated for demodectic mange while in the SOS program. The dog has responded well to this treatment. Please note that demodex can flare up in any dog in times of stress (eg, transport, transition to a new home, change in food, etc). As such, the adopter is advised to discuss this condition and best next steps with their veterinarian. SOS recommends that dogs with a history of demodectic mange be kept on regular NexGard or Bravecto for flea/tick prevention for at least 3 months or until 18 months of age. Please see here for more information on demodectic mange: http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/mange-demodectic-in-dogs/741 . Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

**Additional info you should know -  For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix.  We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label.   Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption.  There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
