This little goddess is no myth!
Meet Hattie (formally known as Hathor Egypt), one of the five girls in the Egypt litter of ten puppies. All of her littermates have been adopted into New England homes and are doing great. Now it's Hattie's turn!

She's beautiful with her soft chocolate brown coat and with just a bit of white on her chest. She'll most likely be a large dog when all grown up. She was born and raised together with her littermates in a private home in the south along with their Mom until 10-weeks old. Mom looks to be a Labrador Retriever/Heeler mix and Dad was reported to be a Black Labrador Retriever.

As a young puppy, Hattie was a happy, sweet girl. As an older puppy, her personality has emerged and she remains loving, gentle, sweet, and happy. She has a playful nature and is affectionate and sweet, but is not hyper. She's interested in meeting and making friends with new dogs, and is not interested in the cats living in her home. She rarely barks, and besides being playful with humans she has befriended, toys and other dogs, she has a relatively calm nature. She has been living in a foster home with many other dogs and cats and has been doing well there. S he will take a toy and try to give it to one of the other dogs so they can play tug-o-war. Her care has been focused on helping her become physically healthy (see below), but she has learned some basic manners and house living expectations along the way. She will need a family who is committed to getting her daily exercise (both cardio and muscle tone exercises) and in-home massage and stretching for at least the next 4 four months to help her regain as much range of motion and muscle as possible.

Hattie has not lived with children; she would likely do fine with respectful children, but she would need an adjustment period to get to know them and trust them. She has not experienced many visits from and to new humans, so she may be a little unsure with new people at first. S he is house trained and rarely has accidents. She's used to being left alone for 2-3 hours at a time and is quiet and clean in her crate. These skills will likely need reinforcement in her new home, as her environment will be different. Most of the time, Hattie is food motivated, so further training should be straightforward. We strongly recommend that all our dogs - and especially puppies - attend obedience classes because you get to learn commands together, and it offers an opportunity for confidence building and socialization for the dog - with other dogs, people and new situations. Classes also help to strengthen that ever-important bond between the dog and her human family. It’s lots of fun, too! A well-mannered, obedient dog will be welcomed most anywhere you take her.

Though a fenced yard is an ideal place for your puppy to romp and play safely, if that’s not an option then lots of daily leash walks and opportunities to play off-leash in a dog park is the next best thing. A tired dog is a good dog! Dogs of all ages also benefit from mental stimulation – think puzzle toys and games. Puppies are a lot of work and require a strong commitment to teaching them obedience, socializing them with other dogs and people, playing with them and loving them to pieces. It takes a lot of time, energy and patience to bring up a puppy - and it’s totally worth it!

Hattie doesn't need a pyramid - just a nice comfy bed and a forever family to love and accept her for who she is. Does that sound like your home? Are you ready to make her dreams come true? Fill out an application today and sweet puppy kisses from this little goddess may soon be yours!

Medical Note: Hattie had the very unfortunate luck of having her leg/hip injured prior to intake with SOSARL in the summer of 2017. Being so young when she was injured, surgery was not immediately recommended. After several months of observation in foster care, we decided that Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) surgery offered her the best chance of resuming normal use of her leg and leading a normal life. This surgery was completed on 10/10/2017, and her surgeon has high hopes for a full recovery. So far, Hattie is recovering very nicely. Her exercise is gradually being increased, and her muscle mass is rebuilding nicely. Her range of motion in the hip is already more than twice what it was before the surgery. Once fully recovered from this surgery (about 4-12 months), she's expected to be able to lead a full, active life and no further surgery or medical intervention is expected to be necessary for this injury. Daily exercise (both cardio and muscle tone exercises) and in-home massage and stretching is recommended for at least the next 4 four months to help her regain as much range of motion and muscle as possible. Here is a link for more information on FHOs: http://www.pethealthnetwork.com/dog-health/dog-surgery-a-z/dog-hip-surgery-what-you-need-know-about-femoral-head-ostectomy-fho . As a dog ages, natural wear and tear on the joints can be expected. Dogs like Hattie who have a history of orthopedic issues/injuries are no different, and are potentially at a greater risk of developing arthritis and/or new or related injuries as they age and go through life. Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

Medical Note: A littermate of this dog tested positive and was treated for demodectic mange while in the SOS program. This dog has also been preventatively treated and currently shows no symptoms of demodectic mange. Please note that demodex can have a hereditary component and/or flare up in any dog in times of stress (e.g., transport, transition to a new home, change in food, etc.). As such, the adopter is advised to discuss this condition and best next steps with their veterinarian. SOS recommends that dogs with a personal or family history of demodectic mange be kept on regular NexGard or Bravecto for flea/tick prevention for at least 3 months after adoption or until 18 months of age. Please see here for more information on demodectic mange: http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/mange-demodectic-in-dogs/741 . Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

**Additional info you should know -  For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label.  Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
