This girl is nothing short of EXCEPTIONALLY AWESOME! Kai is sweet, calm, friendly, smart, eager to please, gentle, playful, cuddly and quiet! She has a gorgeous smooth blue and white coat and the cutest freckles on her legs and neck. She is very well house trained and crate trained. She is good with other dogs once introduced properly and enjoys their company, but like most herding dogs, can be a little rude or snotty upon first introduction. She does best with other dogs who are not hyper, overly reactive, or in her face. She is looking for a confident human leader who understands this behavior and how to guide her. She has lived in several foster homes with other dogs and done great, and also goes to doggie daycare where she does best in smaller groups, and likes to play chase around the yard with her Chihuahua foster brother. She can be vocal and goofy during play (that is just her style), but is otherwise a calm and quiet girl.
Kai is a great walking companion on a leash with an Easy Walk harness. She is looking for a home with no kitties, as she sees them as great fun to chase! Though she doesn't currently live with any children, she has been very submissive, calm and gentle when approached by them while out and about, and would likely fit in very well into a household with some children. She used to be anxious while riding in the car but is doing great now. She may need a little encouragement to get into and out of the car, but once in, she lays down and rides nicely. She is eager to please and is very trainable. She will need her person to have some knowledge of herding dogs and understanding of this kind of willfulness and intelligence, and how to respond appropriately if she gets snotty. She responds exceptionally well to training and knows "sit," "down," and "stop." Her southern foster has taught her some Spanish commands as well, so she's bilingual! (Vamonos - Let's go; Bajar - get down; Callete - be quiet; Ya - stop; Andale - hurry; Corte - run. Some of these may be slang.) We strongly recommend that all our dogs attend obedience training with their new family, and this will be especially important for Kai. Besides building confidence and helping with socialization, it can strengthen the bond between the pup and her people. Dogs of all ages also benefit from mental stimulation - think puzzle toys, busy feeders, games and in Kai's case, agility training.
Kai's foster mom believes that she is near perfect. She will need a little reinforcement that jumping up on people when she is excited is not polite, but she does not do this too much. She has been given freedom to lounge on the sofa and bed and she loves it! She is used to sleeping in her crate at night and when her foster mom is not home, but she could likely be left loose with no destruction. Though she may not need a fenced yard, she will need lots of daily walks and stimulation. A tired dog is a good dog! She's very playful and always up for some rough wrestling or a game of tug-of-war, but when playtime's over she's just as happy to curl up with you and chill out.
This down-to-earth sweetheart is very excited at the thought of a forever home - a place with lots of toys and a nice soft bed. She is more than ready to find that home, and we promise that she will complete your household like none other. Fill out an application today and make Kai's dreams come true!
Medical Note: Kai was abandoned injured at a Texas public park back in May 2017. X-rays revealed a spiral fracture of unknown origin of her left rear leg. This fracture has healed with rest and is now stable. She is using the leg well and shows no discomfort or limited activity from this injury. Re-exam on 8/14/17 by an orthopedic specialist released her to normal activity and showed no visible signs of fracture problems or lameness. She has resumed normal activity with no seeming limitations. Any dog with a history of orthopedic injury could be more prone to stiffness and/or discomfort after activity or over time as the dog ages, as well as being at higher risk for future orthopedic issues, related or unrelated to the original injury.
