There's 11 lbs of energy compressed in this little poodle-like body, and it's what makes King Arthur so lovable. He's a big dog trapped in a small dog body, just bursting to get out. So expect big dog antics and big dog energy from King Arthur. He's no shrinking violet. And don't expect him to be a lapdog. He'll tussle and playbite with the best of them.
He can be calm meeting new dogs, new cats and new small animals for the first time, but once he gets to know them, he's hyper and playful. Some dogs and people might find him a tad overbearing. He loves roughhousing and playing tug of war, and at times, to show he's really tough, he'll try mounting dogs too, but that's just to prove he's bigger than he is. So he'll need to find ways to redirect his energy because he can't keep focused. We love him because of his affectionate and goofy ways. He loves toys, the squeakier the better.
He does bark some, but we think it's cute. And in the house, he likes to chew and jump on furniture so he'll need to be redirected.
So, as you can see, basic training is a requirement for King Arthur; he is fun and affectionate, but also hyper, willful and needs a strong leader. He should NOT be expected to be a lap dog, and should be treated like a big dog or there will be issues. Obedience classes will help King Arthur get to know his family members and provide a common language to speak from. It also sets good, healthy boundaries for King Arthur to heed so he'll be a welcome addition to his new family. Based on his energy levels, it's clear he also requires exercising and it'll help him to focus on obedience and training. So a fenced yard is ideal, but King Arthur loves attention so long leashed walks are preferable, plus it gives him a chance to practice good canine citizen skills when incorporated with training. He also does great on a leash!
