Is there anything more beautiful and inviting to the touch than shiny black velvet? Only our very own beautiful, shiny black Velvet! She looks to be a mix of Labrador Retriever and Basset Hound with her long, low body and probably born late December 2016. She's a sweet, fun dog, full of love and play! She likes to walk on a leash but she’s quite a strong dog who definitely needs an adult holding the leash. Looking for a walking or running partner? If so, Velvet is the dog for you, in fact this girl was a part of our Mississippi rescue partner's running club - volunteers get together and take some of the dogs running with them.

She is working on house training and so far, so good, especially if she get’s some regular outside time, either in a fenced yard or on a walk with you!  We don’t yet know how she is with kids or kitty cats. Velvet is a quiet dog that rarely barks and is incredibly calm in her new foster home.   She can be a little shy when meeting new people and going to new places, but give her just a little time and she will settle in and be your new best friend!  She is crate trained and she sleeps in her crate all night, with the door open! She plays well with some other dogs outside, but won't tolerate being pushed around so she is not a great dog park candidate. For this reason, she might also do best as an only dog in her new home. She respects corrections and guidance, and is toy and treat motivated - that will make obedience classes a breeze. It's a great way to continue working on socialization and confidence building, while learning cool stuff and spending quality bonding time together. Velvet will climb out of her pen when she's bored, so she should have supervision while out in the yard. A fenced yard (6-ft. recommended) is the ideal safe place for your pup to romp and play, but if it's not an option then daily leash walks with opportunities to play off-leash at an empty dog park will do just fine. She LOVES being with people and going places!

Quiet and sweet, Velvet was found living in a rough area on the porch of an abandoned house with her puppy. She loves to be loved on and is looking for a forever home where she can go for walks, meet new people and just be with her new forever human(s). Has this gorgeous love stolen your

Medical Note: This dog has been treated for heartworm disease with melarsomine injections. Treatment is completed and the dog tests negative for microfilaria. She is now cleared to resume normal activity and able to be adopted. Untreated heartworm disease can cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life even after the parasites are gone, possibly presenting as medical complications and/or new conditions in the future. This dog showed no symptoms of heartworm disease before or during treatment. A good resource for more information on heartworm disease is: https://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/heartworm-basics . Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence.
