Sammy is a sweet, spunky little guy who is sure to win you over!
Due to his rough start on the streets he takes a little time to warm up to new people and will need a patient and understanding family who will go slow with him. He is still learning to trust humans and doesn't like being reached for, however, with a little time and lots of treats he will cuddle up next to you on the couch. Due to his shyness he must go into a home with another well- balanced dog to help show him the ropes. He really shines when he's with other dogs and is quick to catch onto a routine and will follow their lead. He loves to run, wrestle and is happy to share his toys with anyone who will play with him, both two- or four- legged. He is house trained, and quiet and clean in his crate. He would also do best in a home without young children due to his shyness and discomfort of being handled. He would greatly benefit from group training classes but since he loves treats and is so smart already we think he will do very well.
Sammy's foster mom says, leash
training is definitely something that will have to be worked on with this little guy. He's not quite sure what to make of it just yet. He becomes pretty nervous outside of his home environment and will often just curl up on the ground. Lots and lots of treats will get him to take a few steps but he isn't quite ready to hit the trails just yet. He would greatly benefit from a fenced in yard while he's practicing his leash skills. This will help him gain confidence outdoors and be very helpful for potty breaks!
So who is ready to add this energetic little guy to their pack? Fill out an application for Sammy today and let him know he’s the one for you!
Sammy’s Story: He is from a group of five stray dogs that were being cared for by a family at a rental property. The family moved and did not take the dogs with them. The new renters fed the abandoned dogs and reached out to a rescue organization for help in finding them forever homes. Sammy is now living with a loving foster family.
Medical Note: This dog was treated for demodectic mange while in the SOS program. The dog has responded well to this treatment. Please note that demodex can flare up in any dog in times of stress (eg, transport, transition to a new home, change in food, etc). As such, the adopter is advised to discuss this condition and best next steps with their veterinarian. SOS recommends that dogs with a history of demodectic mange be kept on regular NexGard or Bravecto for flea/tick prevention for at least 3 months or until 18 months of age. Please see here for more information on demodectic mange: http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/mange-demodectic-in-dogs/741. Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence.
