Meet Maggie!
Maggie is a sweet dog who looks to be a Beagle/Terrier mix. She has long legs, and a thin physique, as well as a beautiful sleek coat. She likes affection from her people, and gets excited when older respectful children visit her. She is almost totally house trained, crate trained (she usually whines or barks for the first 10 minutes or so, but then settles down with a couple of toys and a Kong), and is leash trained. She would do best in a household that is not too busy with new people coming and going, and can give her plenty of exercise and stimulation. She currently enjoys four walks a day around the neighborhood - after 15 minutes (or less) she lets you know when she wants to head back home. For a petite girl, she's quite strong and at times requires direction to settle down, to "sit" and "stay" (using treats). She has a strong prey drive and will try to chase squirrels and rabbits so a strong grip on the leash is imperative! She encountered a cat on one of her walks and tried to pull her foster mom in that direction. At times she wants to start her walk with a run as soon as she's out of the house. Though a fenced yard isn't necessarily required, it would give Maggie a secure place to run and play off some of her energy. She's fearful of trucks whether on a walk, in the house and hears one go by, or even in the car if one drives by. She appears visibly shaken and either cowers or wants to run away from the noise. She is a love bug with people she knows. She needs a little patience and time to warm up to new people and situations. She can be very nervous, and proper reinforcement and encouragement will help her continue to build her courage. She was excited to meet a couple of neighborhood dogs, a big chocolate lab and a small terrier, but may be a little too rough with small dogs. She really enjoys play time in the house - especially playing fetch with her squeaky toys or a tennis ball. While Maggie has had some basic training, we recommend that her adopters plan to take her to basic training group classes to further strengthen these skills and her bond with her new people, as well as work on her confidence and socialization with new people and dogs. While in the house, Maggie will bark at passers-by or the sounds of car doors shutting, etc. For a little girl, she has a loud bark! She also makes a cute grumbly noise as she settles in for a nap or for the night: She'll curl up and with her last heavy exhale, she makes this odd, grumbly nasal sound. She also loves to "bury" her new toys in or under the furniture covers or a blanket and whines excitedly while searching for the best spot. In her foster home she's allowed on the furniture and will arrange any throw pillows to her liking, and at times will cuddle with her human on the couch. This beautiful, sweet girl will make a great addition to the right home! Fill out an application today!
Maggie's History: Maggie was adopted into a RI home in 2015 via SOS as a 4 month old puppy. Maggie is unfortunately looking for a new home now, as her humans can no longer care for her due to serious medical issues.
