Say hello to Banjo, also known as Kane. Banjo appears to be a Australian Shepherd/St . Bernard/Bernese Mountain Dog mix - he has a beautiful coat, a huge head, and gorgeous light colored eyes. He's a great dog who loves all people and wants to please. Banjo is house trained and crate trained, but does occasionally have instances of excited urination. He is extremely strong and needs continued work on his leash manners; he's made a lot of progress already and walks well in a Gentle Leader (head harness). Banjo will chase cats intently if they run, so he should be placed in a home without cats. Banjo is treadmill trained, and enjoys 30-60 minutes of treadmill exercise per day, as well as regular training exercises throughout the day. He loves to ride in the car; he's quiet and not restless, and falls asleep quickly.

Banjo is a great dog who will make someone's home and heart complete, but he is looking for a very specific home. Banjo must be the only pet, have access to a tall, privacy fenced yard, have a minimum of 1-2 hours of mental and physical exercise per day, and have humans who understand his needs and are committed to continuing his training and exercise routines .

Banjo's history: Banjo came into rescue in the spring of 2015. He had been in a neglectful home and was much too thin; he has since put on some good weight. While in rescue at that time, Banjo lived in a household with many other dogs of various sizes and did well. In the spring of 2015, Banjo was placed in an adoptive home in the north where he lived for almost 8 months until he was returned after showing dog aggression which had started as unaddressed leash reactivity. Since he has been back in rescue, we have worked intently with Banjo to meet his exercise/stimulation requirements, and also desensitize him to other dogs.   B anjo continues to be dog aggressive and reactive; his interactions with other animals will need to be limited and tightly managed.   This work will need to be continued and SOS will offer training support to him in his new home.

Do you have room in your heart and home for this gentle mini-giant?

**Additional info you should know -  For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix.  We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label.   Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption.  There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
