Hello, Maggie Murphy! Welcome to SOS!
This pretty sweetheart appears to be a Blue Heeler/Terrier mix almost 7 months old, and the perfect puppy! She's fine with kids and with other dogs - she's inquisitive about cats, so we don't know if she would chase them if they ran or not. She's very affectionate and friendly in a shy way, and once settled would maybe love a lap to curl up on. She is house trained (always goes for you first thing in the morning and before bed), and is already crate trained. She'll need continued work on her leash walking - she does pull (this may be because she's being walked with another dog) and has chewed through two harnesses. We strongly recommend that all our dogs attend obedience classes because you get to learn commands together, and it offers an opportunity for confidence building and socialization for the dog, and it also helps to strengthen that ever-important bond between the dog and her human family. It’s lots of fun, too! A well-mannered, obedient dog will be welcomed most anywhere you take her. Maggie's got some basics already down: sit, down, stay and touch! Though a fenced yard is an ideal place for your puppy to romp and play safely, if that’s not an option then lots of daily leash walks and opportunities to play off-leash in a dog park is the next best thing. A tired dog is a good dog! Dogs of all ages also benefit from mental stimulation – think puzzle toys and games. This will be especially true for Maggie since her breed mix most likely means she needs strong leadership, and at least 1-2 hours of exercise and stimulation a day. She likes going for walks and hikes. Basic training is a must, and tricks, agility, or further training would be great! She should be made to sit for everything: putting on or taking off the leash, waiting for her food, going out the door - she's really good at this and is a fast learner! She'll do best in an active household that has lots of time for her. She's playful, likes toys, is eager to please, even-tempered and gentle, can sometimes be "mouthy" and will sometimes jump on people. She needs to be watched as she may get into mischief, but "no" and "eh" stops any unwanted behavior. She can entertain herself if there's no one to play with. She will bark at new sounds and wants to chase the birds and the bunnies. She does get car sick, even on very short rides, which is common for puppies. Her foster puts an old towel on the floor in the back and Maggie prefers to lie there. If she doesn't outgrow this, your vet can advise you on what to do. Puppies are a lot of work and require a strong commitment to teaching them obedience, socializing them with other dogs and people, playing with them and loving them to pieces. It takes a lot of time, energy and patience to bring up a puppy - and it’s totally worth it!
Maggie was dumped in a yard pen at one of our southern partner's shelter during the night. She's loving and sweet - a great puppy - and would absolutely LOVE to find a place and family she can call hers forever. Fill out an application today for Maggie Murphy! She'll be waiting just for you!
