Meet Ozzie!
Ozzie appears to be a 1 year old beagle mix. He currently weighs in at 23 pounds. Isn't he adorable? He has black and tan fur, and a tail that is ALWAYS wagging! He is an energetic little guy, and is looking for a family that can keep up with him! He has been friendly with everyone that he has met, including all adults and children. He is still learning his manners with food - if he gets the opportunity, he will not hesitate to take it; little children with food in their hands may not appreciate this!

Ozzie is also very friendly with all dogs he meets and would love to have a canine friend in his new family! He has done okay with cats, but does like to try to play with them and chase them. Right now Ozzie is working on house training, crate training, and leash training, and is making good progress for all of them! He uses a doggie door when he needs to use the bathroom, and is still having some accidents, but is on his way there! He is currently being fed in his crate, and sleeps in it overnight as well.

Ozzie is a wonderful cuddle pup once he slows down. He is good in the car - just lays down. He's not afraid of the leash and looks forward to an outing. Does he "heel"? No. He keeps his nose close to the ground and tracks every inch of the walk, slowly. If he sees a squirrel, he will try to give chase, but can be redirected. He has been living in a household with cats and is fascinated with them. If he could chase them, he would but he would not do them harm.

Ozzie is very is treat and toy motivated, so he does anything we ask, including being a good boy. He would love to go with you to obedience classes to learn basic commands and tricks! We strongly recommend that all of our dogs attend obedience classes, as they give the dog opportunities for confidence building and socialization. You also get to learn the commands with your canine buddy, which is a lot of fun, and will help strengthen the bond between you! Although Ozzie is a high energy pup, he does not require a fenced yard so long as he gets plenty of daily walks and opportunities for off-leash play, like at a dog park. His favorite way to burn off energy is by playing fetch, which he never grows tired of, so a fenced area would be great for him! He is going to require 2-4 hours of exercise per day, because of his high energy. Dogs of all ages also benefit from mental stimulation - think puzzle toys and games! A tired dog is a good dog! Ozzie is on his way to becoming a well-rounded pup, if you would like to add him to your family apply today!

Ozzie's Backstory: Ozzie was surrendered to one of our southern partners when his owner didn't have time for him. He was unsocialized and shy. He has blossomed so much since being in foster care - he is affectionate, likes to be held, and is starting to love attention!

Medical Note:  Ozzie is suspected of having a food allergy; his symptom being chronic loosely formed stools (but not diarrhea). As of 3/23, he was started on a hydrolyzed protein diet and we are hoping that this will help. He may need to remain on this diet for life.

Medical Note: This dog was treated for Demodectic Mange while in the SOS program. This dog has responded well to this treatment. Please note that Demodex can flare up in any dog in times of stress (eg, transport, transition to a new home, change in food, etc.). As such, the adopter is advised to discuss this condition and best next steps with their veterinarian. SOS recommends that dogs with a  history of demodectic mange be kept on regular NexGard or Bravecto for flea/tick prevention for at least 3 months or until 18 months of age. Please see here for more information on demodectic mange http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/mange-demodectic-in-dogs/741. Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

Medical Note: This dog tested positive for exposure to ehrlichia while in SOS foster care. This does not mean that this dog had ehrlichia. This dog is/has been asymptomatic while in SOS care and was preventatively treated with a 28-day course of doxycycline. Please see here for more information on ehrlichia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehrlichiosis_(canine) . Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

**Additional info you should know -  For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix.  We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label.   Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption.  There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
